Human Rights Law Centre

Freedom. Respect. Equality. Dignity. Action.

The Human Rights Law Centre is dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights in Australia and beyond. We do this through a strategic combination of evidence-based advocacy, research, litigation and education.

The HRLC is an independent, not-for-profit, non-government organisation and is a registered charity so all donations are tax deductible.

We work in coalition with key partners, including community organisations, law firms and barristers, academics and experts, and international and domestic human rights organisations.

Over the last six years, we’ve established constitutional protection of the right to vote, improved access to healthcare for prisoners, provided human rights training to over 15,000 people and held Australia to account for its human rights obligations on the international stage.

Our work over the next five years will focus on:

  • strengthening legal recognition and protection of human rights
  • reforming anti-discrimination laws to promote substantive equality and address systemic discrimination
  • ensuring Australia engages positively and constructively with United Nations human rights bodies and respects and implements its international legal obligations
  • advocating that detention be used only as a last resort and that conditions in detention respect human rights and dignity
  • promoting human rights through Australian foreign policy
  • partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • ensuring a human rights-based approach to the police use of force and the investigation of police-related deaths
  • advocating a human rights-based approach to preventing and responding to violence against women.

We know that these are ambitious and challenging goals, but they are areas of real human rights need where our work is having an impact.
